Digital landscape is a huge area with opportunities and possibilities. Although it is popular amongst youth, even senior citizens reap the benefits of technology these days. Aaviyanta Foundation has started an awareness project where it teaches the importance of Online safety to senior citizens using social media platforms, to stay connected with their family abroad, from harm of cyber criminals. Also, some individuals like doing online business, and hence teaching them ways to collaborate with other people and do ethical business through internet is also explored in the program
We do so by giving them sessions on:
- Familiarity with terms and common platforms
- Adapting to new technology
- Collaboration & Business
The increased online dependency for people around the world is creating opportunities for cyber-criminals to use digital spaces and social media as a tool to commit crimes, such as; harassing, looting, and intimidating other social media users. There has been an increasingly large concern over the last several years around cyber crimes created through the use of social media platforms.
The problem came more to the surface during the COVID-19-induced lock down with “caged criminals” targeting their victims online. They either try to defame women on social media or create fake accounts or stalk young girls or force them to do dangerous challenges or intend towards online sexual relationships for fun. These crimes are often carried out amongst women & gender diverse communities because they are an easier group to manipulate and exploit. Many do not know what to do in such cases, while the majority do not even report cyber crime because they worry about the social stigma associated with it. Safe education and awareness on such topics can enable the population to avoid unsafe situations. As we cannot change evil minds, we can only be weary, learn about the right processes to save ourselves, and take precautions to not get into such vulnerable situations.
The issue we are seeking to address through this proposal is that of cyber-crime and how digital safety education can aid in reducing such crimes. The objective of our project is to teach skills to safely and securely navigate the online world/ social media platforms, be vigilant to not fall into any traps, and help make others be aware of the same.
