TECHLEADHERS

How It all Started: The Begin of TechLeadHers

In Nepal, as in many parts of the world, the IT sector grapples with a significant gender gap. According to the World Bank, women occupy only 28% of IT jobs and a mere 15.9% of engineering and architecture roles globally. In Nepal, the situation is even more stark: just 0.5% of economically active women work in ICT, and UNESCO reports that only 7.8% of researchers are women. These disparities arise from entrenched gender biases, societal norms, and limited access to STEM education.

Recognizing the need for change, the Tech LeadHers Fellowship emerged as a beacon of hope. Launched by the Aaviyanta Foundation, this initiative aimed to empower young women in Kathmandu’s tech industry, particularly within Ward 17 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). The program’s mission was clear: to foster women’s leadership in tech and create gender-inclusive narratives that would bring about lasting community impact. The Tech LeadHers Fellowship, an initiative of Aaviyanta Foundation, was designed to empower young women to take on leadership roles within the technology sector. With the mission to foster women’s leadership in tech and bring gender-inclusive narratives for lasting community impact, and the vision to see 50% of IT companies in Kathmandu led by women, we began our journey on January 2, 2024. The program aimed to provide comprehensive technical training, mentorship, and opportunities for participants to solve local community challenges.

What We Do

Community Engagement: Making a Real-World Impact

One of the most impactful components of the Tech LeadHers Fellowship was the Hours of Community Work (HOC). Fellows applied their newly acquired skills to address real-world challenges within their communities. Collaborating with local schools and senior citizen centers in Ward 17, they conducted workshops, awareness campaigns, and interactive sessions. These activities not only benefited the community but also provided participants with invaluable hands-on experience, reinforcing the practical applications of their learning.

Mentorship: Guiding the Way

Mentorship played a crucial role in the success of the Tech LeadHers Fellowship. Each team was paired with a mentor who provided technical guidance, project management advice, and moral support. Regular check-ins ensured that participants stayed on track and overcame any challenges they encountered. The mentors, experienced professionals in the tech industry, were instrumental in helping participants navigate their journey, offering insights and encouragement along the way.

Final Projects: Innovating for Change

The culmination of the Fellowship was the final project competition. Participants identified real-world problems within Ward 17, conducted research, and developed technological solutions. These projects were a testament to the creativity, innovation, and hard work of the participants. They were evaluated based on problem understanding, solution quality, presentation skills, and overall impact. The competition was fierce, but it showcased the remarkable talent and potential of these women.

Leadership

The TechLeadHers Fellowship empowers women in technology to become impactful leaders by combining mentorship, skill-building, and real-world problem-solving experiences. Through guidance from industry professionals, participants develop essential leadership qualities such as decision-making, communication, and team management. The program emphasizes not only technical skills but also soft skills like emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking, which are crucial for leadership roles.

Following the bootcamp, the program transitioned into a series of weekly sessions. These sessions were meticulously designed to build on the participants’ existing knowledge and prepare them for the challenges ahead. They covered advanced programming, leadership development, project and product management, and practical problem-solving. Each session was an opportunity for the participants to hone their skills further, gaining confidence and competence with every passing week.
